Hi-Vis Workwear Standards in Australia (AS/NZS 4602.1)

High-visibility clothing in Australia is governed by AS/NZS 4602.1:2024, the standard that defines how retroreflective and fluorescent garments must be designed for daytime and night-time visibility. If your team works near traffic, plant or moving equipment, compliant hi-vis isn't optional — it's the law.

The three garment classes

• Class 1 — lowest risk environments, e.g. warehouse pickers away from vehicles.
• Class 2 — mid-risk, such as roadside workers and delivery drivers.
• Class 3 — highest risk (high-speed roads, night work). Requires more fluorescent and retroreflective area, often a hi-vis jacket or vest over other clothing.

Day vs night use

AS/NZS 4602.1 garments are often tagged for day use only or day/night use. Night or low-light work requires retroreflective tape positioned around the body and arms so the wearer's shape is visible to drivers.
